Description
A seven-volume manuscript edition of a "lineage novel" (kamun sosŏl), a sub-genre of Chosŏn vernacular novels (ŏnmun sosŏl) that are multi-volume narratives about the vicissitudes of illustrious lineages. The novel's backdrop is early Ming. The story is connected to other lineage novels such as Ogwŏn chaehap kiyŏn. The Naksŏnjae collection of vernacular novels include another manuscript edition, consisting of twenty volumes.
The cover of the first volume of the HYL manuscript indicates that seven books (ch'aek) form a complete set. The transcription note (p'ilsagi) at the end of the seventh book, too, bears the word "죵." At the end of every volume is a transcription note. With the exception of that of the seventh book reading "륭희사년경슐칠월이십팔일슈교필셔," all of the transcription notes indicate that a certain unmarried woman surnamed Sin transcribed the book. The transcriptions notes from volumes 1-6, which vary slightly, read as follows: "륭희연월일경슈표교신소져필셔" (volume 1), "륭희연월일경슈표교신소져필셔" (volume 2), "륭희연월일경표교신소져필셔" (volume 3), "륭희연원결슈표교신소져필셔" (volume 4), "륭희연월일표교신쇼져필셔하다" (volume 5), "륭희연월일슈표교신소져필셔하다" (volume 6). "슈표교" (Shup'yo kyo) refers to one of numerous bridges that straddle Kaech'ŏn (today's Ch'ŏnggyech'ŏn Stream). The Sup'yo Bridge literally means "Water Gauge Bridge" and was built for the purpose of measuring the water level.
